All Kids Movie Trailers! The one thing I love about moving into Los Angeles is the number of revival houses and single screen cinemas you can still head to. I'm not talking about your multiplexes which are playing the most up-to-date Hollywood blockbusters, I'm referring to those historic concert halls that play the classic movies we loved watching once we were becoming an adult. Many of these films we first watched on tv or rented them on VHS from our local video stores (back when they existed), but we never got a chance to see them on the big screen where they belonged. But as a result of places like New Beverly Cinema, the Egyptian Theatre and Grauman's Chinese among other movie theatres, we finally get to see them the way they were meant to be seen.
Now I know many people who currently would prefer to curl up for the sofa and watch movies at home, however, these cult movies should be seen for the big screen if you are ever in Los Angeles.
"The Rocky Horror Picture Show"
This musical comedy horror cult classic which stars Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick and also the great Tim Curry like a "sweet transvestite from Transsexual, Transylvania" could be the longest-running midnight movie in recent history. Thirty-eight years after "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" arrived, it's still playing in limited release and midnight screenings keep going on all over America. However, have not lived til you have seen this movie at the Nuart Theatre in Santa Monica where audience members can wear their favorite characters and talk time for the screen in a way they couldn't if this were another movie. "The Room" continues to sell out midnight screenings with the Regent Theatre in Los Angeles, and you can always rely on Wiseau being there to complete a Q&A session using the fans. Audience members come dressed as a common characters, one scene has them throwing plastic spoons in the screen, they will toss footballs to one another during the movie, and they yell out insults about the undeniably poor quality of the film. There are so many things wrong with "The Room," yet it is so great to watch by having an audience.
"The Big Lebowski"
Joel and Ethan Coen followed up their masterpiece "Fargo" using this type of dark comedy starring Jeff Bridges as Jeff "The Dude" Lebowski. The movie was obviously a box office disappointment, nevertheless it has since garnered one of several biggest and strangest cult followings of any movie ever made because of the main character's unapologetically laid back attitude. Screenings of "The Big Lebowski" is found at various Los Angeles movie theatres, though the real treat for fans is the place the Lebowski Fest comes to town. What "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" is always to the Nuart Theatre, "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World" has quickly become to New Beverly Cinema. The still standing Los Angeles repertory revival house was the first to show Edgar Wright's film following your end of the theatrical run, and contains since taken on a permanent midnight residence alongside "Reservoir Dogs" and "Pulp Fiction." Wright, who's hosted several movie programs on the New Beverly, turns up at "Scott Pilgrim" screenings to answer questions from the audience, and the man has brought together with him several of the film's stars including Michael Cera. "Big Trouble in Little China"
Every Los Angeles screening I have seen of John Carpenter's martial arts training comedy has always ended in a soldout audience. Thanks to home video, "Big Trouble in Little China" gained a massive cult following, and audiences adore it today you might say that you wished they did back when it first arrived on the scene. It's a real kick to watch this film by having an audience as is also in hysterics over Kurt Russell delivering his dialogue with an unapologetic John Wayne swagger, and that we have long since accepted the fact his character of Jack Burton is much more of a blowhard when compared to a hero. It doesn't matter how many times you have observed this movie; "Big Trouble in Little China" is still a blast to see through.
